Hi friends – Please join us for the next TAXIS open reading group meeting. In August, we are reading around the theme of noise control, focusing on:
Hagood, M. (2019) Hush: Media and Sonic Self-control. Durham: Duke University Press (Sign, Storage, Transmission).
We’ll be meeting on Zoom on Friday August 13th, at 10:00 a.m. (Eastern) / 3:00 p.m. (London) / 4:00pm (Paris) (note the adjusted time!)
NEWS: Recently, members of the group had an application for a working group approved which will be hosted at the US-based Consortium for History of Science, Technology and Medicine (CHSTM). This working group will hold monthly meetings to discuss new, in-progress, or otherwise timely research in the area of Sound and Technology over the next 12 months sticking as close as possible to the current “2nd Friday of the month” schedule. These meetings will be available over video conference (Zoom or similar). New participants are always welcome at TAXIS, so if you think you might like joining the WG, this meeting will be a great way to get a chance to hear about plans for the year ahead.
We also hope that many past participants in TAXIS group meetings will consider joining the working group, which can be done over here: https://www.chstm.org/content/sound-and-technology. As what many of us have enjoyed about this group over the last year or so is its relative informality, we hope to precede/succeed each working group meeting with a more informal discussion of the material.
As usual, we’ll do some work to divvy up Hagood’s text in to shorter chunks that we report back on during the meeting. This will be done over email; there is no formal mailing list for the group.
If you would like to be included in the next meeting or upcoming meetings, please get in touch with either myself (belle2@tcd.ie) or Ezra (ezra@redthunderaudio.com) to be kept in the loop. We will also send out the Zoom link for this meeting by email, closer to the time. All are welcome!
